It fits very clearly within my Mindfulness in the Classroom series, particularly Gratitude. I have been left in awe by the inspiring, clearly mindful activity of gratitude, that has begun. ![]() The impact of this young lady’s simple idea can be seen in this news report, and this compilation video of the positive post it notes written in one day. Her belief that positivity begets positivity that began as an anti-bullying campaign, has led to children and adults alike considering their words carefully and filling the world with kindness, love and appreciation. She single handily has started a movement of positivity that is sweeping the world. Several years ago, a young lady in Canada called Caitlin Haacke, decided to take a stand against bullying. It’s well worth your time.Have you heard of Positive Post It Day? Maybe you have and maybe you haven’t. Start some conversations, pass along some art, and spread some positivity. It may seem like a small gesture, but positive sticky notes can have a huge impact. Place some drawings and positive messages around the mall, the grocery store, and the movie theater. Send your kids home with a handful of sticky notes and an assignment to pass them around their neighborhoods. Who says this needs to stop at the school doors? Maybe take the notes on a field trip. Cover their desks, or a wall in their classrooms. ![]() Direct your drawings and notes toward those people, and make them specific to their situations or their personalities. There may be certain individuals in your school that need a little (or big) dose of positivity. A little bit of planning can go a long way in creating a really cool sticky note mural–and if it’s filled with positive messages, so much the better! A mural can be done by dividing sticky notes by color, or it can be done with value changes and drawings. You’ve probably seen this before–there are a ton of ideas for sticky note murals, and Ian Sands has done a few as well. So, how can this idea be used to spread positivity at your own school? Here are a few ideas. Students and teachers alike loved the messages.Ĭall it performance art, call it guerilla art, call it sticky note graffiti, but in any case, I think we can say this project was a success. At the end of first period, we covered the school with messages on lockers, doors, walls and windows, and then began to hand them out to people face-to-face. When we were finished, there were close to 2,000 sticky notes. Some were quotes, some were compliments, and some were messages of inspiration. Everyone in class who wanted to participate was given a pad of sticky notes that he or she filled with drawings and positive messages. We decided to take that idea and run with it. The original idea came from one of my students who had spent some time writing various positive messages on sticky notes. I suppose the best description of this would be a guerilla art project, but however you might describe it, it started with a goal to spread positivity throughout our school. ![]() Over It makes us realize how hard it is to focus on To another – sometimes consciously, sometimes not. ![]() Impossible to assimilate everything, so the attention is shifted from one point Human mind must process more and more information – so it is constantlyĪdapting to new “environments”. Andy Grove’s phrase inflection point captures this situation nicely. Apple and Google didn’t necessarily intend to disrupt point-and-shoot cameras, stand-alone GPS devices, TV advertising, or the Weather Channel, but they did so nonetheless.įor some time my argument has been that we need a new way of thinking about strategy in environments where traditional barriers to entry are eroding, or in which emerging technologies weaken constraints. And long-standing competitive strengths can be upended almost overnight by someone who has digitized your physical business (hello, Encyclopaedia Britannica) or turned your product into a service (see Zipcar, Airbnb, and Uber). Their environments aren’t stable-companies can be disrupted by entrants from below, as Clayton Christensen has pointed out, but also by competitors using a different business model or moving over from an adjacent industry. ![]() Just ask anyone in retail, entertainment, or telecommunications. Their industry boundaries aren’t clearly delineated-in fact, they’re totally blurry. Attempting to apply it outside those conditions can lead to disaster.īut for a growing number of companies, those conditions don’t apply. The point is that every theory has its constraints. In such cases being an early mover can result in a formidable advantage. Often called network effects, these dynamics mean that the more customers a company has, the more valuable it is to each additional customer. In addition, a whole new category of “platform” companies, such as Google, Apple, and Facebook, have emerged, and the very size of their customer base creates a reinforcing virtuous cycle. Companies are achieving advantage through access to assets rather than ownership of them. Today the dynamics of competitive advantage have shifted once more. Although the industrial giants remained in place for a long time, companies such as Walmart, AIG, Enron, and Citigroup had joined them on the Fortune 500 list by 1995. With the advent of communications and computational technology, strategic advantage began to shift toward companies that leveraged information technology to provide services in addition to goods, and toward models that placed a value on information utilization in addition to product features and functions. Indeed, the Fortune 500 list of 1970 reveals the dominance of huge U.S.-based industrial players such as General Motors, General Electric, Exxon Mobil, and Union Carbide. In the early 1900s, for instance, companies that achieved economies of scope and scale through mass production were dominant, and they remained so right through the period after World War II. Over the years, we have seen systematic shifts in how companies create a strategically valuable position, often reinforced by the constraints of the systems within which they operate. A theory that works beautifully under one set may fall apart under another. The changing nature of competitive advantageĪny theory that seeks to explain cause-and-effect relationships operates within a set of constraints. Procter & Gamble has a similarly strong track record with Tide, Unilever with Dove, and PepsiCo with Tropicana orange juice. As BCG has shown, the candy company Mars has enjoyed very long product life cycles: Snickers and M&M’s (introduced in 19, respectively) are among the best-selling candies in the world today. The theory of cumulative advantage makes a lot of sense in what Martin Reeves and his colleagues at BCG call a classical strategic setting-one in which industry boundaries are clearly delineated, the basis of competition is stable, the environment experiences no major disruptions, and a strong competitive position, once created, can be sustained. That’s one reason the subscription model has become so popular in so many industries-it eliminates the need for customers to consciously decide about routine purchases and offers providers the lure of effortlessly recurring revenue. I completely agree with the authors that customers’ unconscious minds dominate their decision-making process-and I suspect that any company can benefit from making their routine choices easier, faster, and more convenient. And, as Lafley and Martin suggest, it has major implications for how products are developed and brands are managed. I love the notion that customers’ purchase decisions are more closely related to habit and ease than to loyalty-it brings much-needed insight from behavioral science to the study of consumer decisions. That sequence acts as a dark prelude that successfully colors the more traditional Amnesia gameplay that ensues. Though it’s a far cry from anything I’ve seen from Amnesia before, the stressful claustrophobia of it all still fits with Frictional’s atmospheric brand of horror. It’s the kind of action sequence that I expect from games like Battlefield 1. I’m a soldier in World War I running through the trenches, pistol in hand, as bombs and gunfire ring out overhead. When Amnesia: The Bunker begins, I find myself in a surprisingly cinematic situation. Though I’m terrified of the unkillable monster that’s always stalking me from the shadows, the true horror comes from what Amnesia has to say about wartime PTSD - a vital subject that most proper war games try to keep locked in the dark. Amnesia: The Bunker, developer Frictional Games’ most ambitious horror title yet, turns an abandoned World War I bunker into a sprawling haunted house. So perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised that the first horror game that would accomplish that for me in 2023 is, in fact, a new Amnesia game. That trend always leaves me looking for more cerebral horror games, ones that scratch the same itch as 2010’s psychologically unnerving Amnesia: The Dark Descent. There’s a slew of zombie games, for instance, that trade in sharp social commentary for mindless shooting. Though the horror genre has a rich history of using monsters as stand-ins for something truly horrifying, scary video games aren’t always so thematically ambitious. ![]() Instead, it’s made from algae biomass, which is a pretty awesome consideration that shows how Burton is committed to environmentally friendly practices.
